The Mahayana Choir was organized in 1984 to promote Buddhist songs, as a way to become closer to the teachings of Buddha. There are various ways to connect with the teachings of Buddha. Some ways include attending temple services, worshipping the statues of the Buddha or chanting sutras by oneself. Another way to become closer to the Buddhaês heart is through the listening and singing of songs. The songs for this purpose have been written by many composers since the beginning of the 1900s and new songs are presently being written today.
Mr. Hiroshi Nakano has lead the Mahayana Choir since its beginning in 1984. He not only leads the choir, but also composes new songs for the group. Next year, he is looking forward to presenting his new song, –The Way to Buddha” which describes the period of time from His birth until His Nirvana at the Miedo Main Hall in Jodo Shu Head Temple Chion-in.
This year, they presented 11 songs of the Buddha, including Sange no Kokoro (Confessing Heart) and Shisei Ge (Chanting of Four Vows). The performance was so touching that tears came to the eyes of those who listened. We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Mahayana Choir for inspiring us through their songs to learn the way of the Nembutsu. |
